Passover, The Feast Of The New Covenant
Our concept of the new covenant is not really accurate to Hebrew language or thought. We relate to something that is “new” as replacing something that is old and worn out. We apply this thought process to the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. However, the Hebrew word for “new” used to describe the “new covenant” in Jeremiah 31:31 is defined as “renew, refresh, or repair”; for example, it is used to describe the new moon. We know that the moon does not get replaced every month, and neither do God’s covenants get replaced; they are renewed and refreshed to us. As we keep the Feast of Passover, we should understand that Passover is the feast of new, or renewed and unfolding, covenants. During Passover, Jesus enacted a new covenant of salvation unfolding the prophecy of Jeremiah into our time. In the Passover in Egypt, God renewed His covenant with Abraham by unfolding its next fresh step of fulfillment to all the sons of Israel. Understanding Passover as the feast of the new covenant, we anticipate the renewing and unfolding to us of the next step in God’s great new covenant of Jeremiah 31:33-34: “I will put My law within them and on their hearts I will write it for they will all know Me declares the Lord”. With great expectation, we began our Passover celebration with this message.
