The Prophetic Community: A Hierarchy Led By The Holy Spirit

The success of a school of prophets is dependent on an ability to come into a way of relating and communicating that enables the Holy Spirit to be in charge. In this Word, we review the pattern in the Scriptures that shows us how to do this. First, we all have the responsibility to go up the mountain and seek to hear a Word from the Lord. This takes a lot of energy; it’s easier to have someone else do this for us. As it was with Joshua, we choose this day whom we will serve and we choose to commit ourselves to hear God’s voice. Second, we must lay our witness on the table for confirmation. We pray that the Holy Spirit show us how confirmation works in the prophetic community. We are seeking to replace human hierarchy with the hierarchy of the Holy Spirit. Today, we all step down from hierarchy, and we allow the Holy Spirit to take charge. This will take dedication, energy, and commitment to the process of hearing and walking in a confirmed Word from God. As it was for the early Church, we believe the Holy Spirit will lead and confirm (Acts 13:1-4).

We Must Break In To Become A Prophetic Community

We are not just replacing hierarchy with another organizational structure; instead we are determined to break into being a prophetic community. When we are immature, we are under the influence of the spiritual forces that guide us and keep us restrained from being able to appropriate what was promised (Galatians 4:1-3). We trust the Lord in this process. We will continue to go up the mountain and hear the voice of the Lord, and bring what we hear to the prophetic community for confirmation. As we follow His voice and the leading of the Holy Spirit, He will mature us and give us the authority to cast off the spirits that hold us in bondage.

As we conclude the time of Sukkot, we enter into the days of Simchat Torah, which means the joy of Torah. This Word shows us the importance of this time. When the Israelites were ready to take the promised land after 40 years of wandering in the wilderness because of their unbelief, Moses made clear to them the importance of remembering the Word of God and teaching it to generations to come. As with the Israelites, we must ask ourselves, “Are we going to make the same mistakes of the past? Or have we learned our lesson? Can we keep that lesson alive for us and for our children?” The answer is in rehearsing the Word, in binding it to our hearts. Let us find the foundations of our faith, what God has called us to be, and what He has spoken to us. Faith comes by hearing the Word, so we do this by rehearsing His Word and remembering that He is mighty and powerful enough to provide us with what He has promised.

His Divine Power Grants Us Possession Of The Promises

The Israelites’ time in the wilderness was a consequence of their unbelief. In this Feast of Tabernacles message, we open our hearts to the lesson the Lord wants to impart to us out of their experience. God exercised great power when He delivered the Israelites from Egypt, not only to judge Egypt, but also to impress upon His people His great strength and authority. However, when the Israelites were ready to enter the promised land, it was occupied by nations greater and stronger than they were (Deuteronomy 7:1). God wanted them to stand in awe and watch Him move with His power and might to rid the promised land of the oppressors and give the Israelites what He had promised them, but their response was to shrink back in fear and unbelief. Their story shows us a pattern. Whenever God gives a promise, it takes His power and His authority to fulfill it. Just as God’s promise and covenant to Israel are eternal and forever, so are His promises to us. We are positioned to enter into these promises, but they are oppressed and restrained by the powers of darkness. We must believe that He is strong and capable enough to fulfill what He has promised (II Peter 1:3-4). In this time of Sukkot, we cry out to You Lord to avenge us speedily and remove the spirits that are sitting as a restraint on the promises that belong to us as our heritage.

Atonement — Confession And Sanctification

This Word prepares us to enter into the Day of Atonement. In these Ten Days of Repentance, we are reaching for the reality of sanctification and to see the Lord reveal to us the root of our transgression. In the full experience of sanctification, there is not only forgiveness of sin, but the nature that caused that sin is removed. Saul could not find repentance because he refused to discern his sin. The dangerous state of deception that Saul lived in is a warning for us in these days. If we are able to discern our sin and confess it, then He will forgive us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (I John 1:9). In this time of repentance, we are looking for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth. We start the process of our complete sanctification by refusing to deceive ourselves and by being open to His voice about what it is we need to confess. This Word frees us to become a people who speak the truth in love, and it ends a spiritual culture that stifles our growth and prevents the birth of the prophetic community. There are two key aspects to being a prophetic community. First, all of God’s people are to go up the mountain to hear His voice and see Him face to face. We are not to draw back as the Israelites did when they urged Moses to go up the mountain alone. Second, we take what we’ve heard from God and lay it on the table for confirmation by the prophetic community. Even a Word straight out of God’s mouth has to be confirmed according to God’s own principles. As we go through this process, we will find all our answers in the living Word. We will study the Word and then practice it until we grow in it. Jesus is the Way and the Truth, and through Him, we will come into the true life of the prophetic community. Our goal is the fulfillment of Ephesians 4:15-16: speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:8-9). Hierarchy was invented by the children of Israel when they refused to go up the mountain to hear the voice of the Lord and instead, they demanded that Moses go alone into God’s presence in their place. We are determined that every member of the Body of Christ will hear from the Lord individually and speak the truth in love. Individual leadership is giving way to the functioning of a matured prophetic community. As we move forward, we will be careful to heed all the Word that God has spoken to us. Each one of us must boldly enter the Lord’s presence and hear and speak His Word. We will submit the Word we hear for confirmation. We will all supply a piece of the puzzle that will complete the beautiful picture of God’s Word. We throw off every restraint and every intimidation, for He will not forsake us or leave us. He will fulfill the covenant of His Lordship over our lives.

The church was never meant to be a hierarchy, but to be a body of people growing up in love by that which every joint supplies. “Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love” (Ephesians 4:15-16). We’ve heard this teaching before, but now we are going to do it. We must find a way to grow and become all that God has called us to be. Holy Spirit, teach us, lead us, and guide us as we move away from hierarchy into being a prophetic community.

Are Our Actions And Methods In Alignment With Our Beliefs?

This Word asks us one question that opens the door to the new day: Are our actions and methods in alignment with our beliefs? After being in the ministry for some time, Paul had a revelation that he needed to reevaluate and submit what he was doing, “for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain” (Galatians 2:2). Are we running in vain? Are we missing the mark? Our founder John Robert Stevens’ revelation was that God wanted to establish a Kingdom under Christ’s Lordship. The direction and goal for this fellowship has always been the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the bringing forth of His Kingdom. If we are to move forward with John Stevens’ vision, we must honestly evaluate our behaviors and our methods. Are we bringing our churches, schools, and families under the Lordship of Christ? Ephesians 4:12-13 describes our goal: for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. We begin this journey together by breaking bonds, creating an atmosphere of objectivity, and laying everything before the Lord.

This Father’s Day message opens up to us a new level of a very real relationship with God as our Father. In I Chronicles 29, David praises God’s many wonderful attributes. But first and foremost, David says, “Blessed are You, O Lord God of Israel our father, forever and ever.” He recognized that above all things, God is our Father. We must recognize that everything God is doing comes through this relationship to us as Father. This pattern can be seen in the Scriptures. When God judged the gods of Egypt, He was bringing His sons into a relationship with Him. When God brought forth salvation, He did it in a Father-Son relationship. And from that time until now, God as our Father is bringing forth His Kingdom through a relationship to His sons. Today, we worship God for all that He is. He is powerful, He is wonderful–beyond description and comprehension. He is over all things and created all things, but He chooses to relate to us as our Father. Let it be that real and personal. Father, help us see that in everything You are doing, You are bringing each of us into a personal relationship with You as our Father.

The War Over Wisdom

This Word sets us on a path to reach for God’s wisdom and prepares us to be a school of prophets. When Paul heard about the faith that existed in the Ephesian church, he prayed that the eyes of their hearts would be enlightened, so that they would know the hope of God’s calling (Ephesians 1:18). We, too, need this enlightening of our hearts, because we must have understanding in order to be His ambassadors and fulfill His purposes. There is a war against this wisdom. We live in passivity, not realizing how important it is that we reach into His understanding. It may seem that the negative side of the spirit world has wisdom; however, the Scriptures say that “If they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (I Corinthians 2:8). The only way to receive this understanding is by the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 2:11). God has hidden the wisdom and the knowledge, but He is ready to freely give it to us by His Holy Spirit. He will impart that which is necessary for us to function as His instruments. Lord, free us of our ignorance! Open the eyes of our hearts. He loves us so deeply and dearly. It’s time for us to repent of the passivity we’ve had toward our ignorance and become His mature sons.

The End Of The Story: All Things Subjected To The Father

What is our walk with God really all about? This message gives us the answer. Paul writes: “Then comes the end, when He (Christ) hands over the kingdom to the God and Father” (I Corinthians 15:24). God promised that His Kingdom would manifest on earth, but how do we get there? It must happen in God’s order, which means that it must happen according to God’s divine order of authority and in a specific, sequential process. For the Kingdom to manifest, there must be a perfect divine order put in place. Christ is the first fruits (I Corinthians 15:20) because He was made perfect in obedience, and the Kingdom is all about obedience. Christ came with a heart to do the will of the Father. The Father resurrected Him and sat Him at God’s right hand above all other spiritual and natural rulers. In the end, all things will be subject to Christ and then He, in His free will, will give all things over in submission to the Father (I Corinthians 15:28). Right now, however, not all things are in subjection to Christ. In the establishment of the Kingdom, as these principalities and powers are displaced, they must be replaced with a true order in submission to Christ. We fit into this picture because God will use us to replace the spirits who are disobedient and in rebellion. He uses the base things to confound the wise (I Corinthians 1:27). God is preparing us for this, because we cannot displace these spiritual dominions unless we, in our free wills, are obedient in submission to Christ. In God’s grace, He works this preparation in us. We pray that we will have eyes to see what God is doing. His real purpose is to bring us into this process with Him of establishing His rule and reign. Lord, help us with this, and we pray like You taught us that Your Kingdom be established on earth as it is in heaven.

Caretakers After God’s Own Heart

As God’s Kingdom comes to earth, He uses us to displace principalities and powers that are determined not to serve the Lordship of Jesus Christ. First, He delivers us out of the dominion of darkness and puts us into the Kingdom of His love, in submission to His Lordship. Then He says, “I’m going to make you My sons. I’m going to transform you into My image.” He brings us up to a level where we can replace those powers that have rebelled against Him. When God created man, He placed him as a caretaker in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it (Genesis 2:15). In the New Testament, man was commissioned to preach the Gospel to all of creation. It may seem like a different commission, but what God created us to do did not change: He created us to care for creation. Good caretakers cultivate and improve the land, and that is God’s heart for creation. Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the garden left the garden without its caretakers. That position was then usurped by rebellious and disobedient spiritual rulers. However, God promised in Jeremiah 23:1-5 that He would attend to them for their evil deeds, and would raise up righteous shepherds. God is going to give all of creation caretakers after His own heart. As caretakers, we must come to the place where we know who we are and can be objective. Unlike James and John when they were challenged by the Samaritans and wanted to call fire down out of heaven, we cannot react negatively to things in the spirit or natural world when they challenge us in their ignorance and immaturity. We are ambassadors to bring all of creation into submission to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We do not know which spirits will be saved and which will not. How many times have we, in our immaturity, rebelled against the Lord in our own walk? Let us dig into our own spirits and find that beautiful heart that God created in man: the heart that is driven to care for His creation in a way that it becomes all God purposed it to become.
